Canine distemper treatmentCanine distemper treatment Treatment for distemper consists of preventing secondary infections, controlling vomiting and diarrhea, and combating dehydration: - Antibodies are often given to help fight bacterial infections - Palliative drugs are usually given to help aid breathing and control diarrhea - IV drips are used to help replace bodily fluids - Anti convulsant drugs may also be used to help diminish spasms and fits (although in some cases such drugs have limited effect) Basically, your veterinarian will try to make your dog as comfortable as possible through tender care; for example, wiping your dog's eyes and nose, and cleaning him up after bouts with diarrhea. Treatment for distemper lasts at least eight weeks.
Dogs who die from distemper usually do so from two weeks to three
months after becoming infected. Most veterinarians will recommend
