Chew proof dog beds
Chew proof dog
beds
Chew-proof beds
are considered a number one necessity as well as preference for dog breeders,
veterinarians, and kennels, as well as dog owners with experience.
When looking into
a chew-proof bed, there are factors other than durability that you will need
to look for. These include:
- Comfort
- Chew-proofing
- Ease to cleanse
- Ability to be
used indoor/outdoor (depending where your dog stays)
Just because your
dog likes to chew on stuff shouldn't mean that he or she can't sleep in comfort.
There are two main
parts of a dog bed that you need to consider, when it comes to chew proofing.
Many dog beds, such as nest beds and many luxury and designer dog beds, have
frames that surround the actual padded area that your dog sleeps upon. Materials
like wicker and wood are extremely chewable, and damage very quickly. Metals
and chew-proof nylons and plastics are therefore a much more durable choice.
That's the easy
part. Now for the tough part. The fabric. Anything that is really soft will
also get chewed. When it comes to ultimate durability, you'll want nylon, preferably
Cordura - or Cordura-like - nylon. You will want to have the design of the bed
keep the fabric folds and seams tucked within a frame - hidden from teeth -
in the case of the chewiest dog. It will provide a reasonable level of padding,
and will most certainly get your dog up and off the hard, cold floor.
Cordura is an extremely
useful type of nylon fabric that makes the outer shell of the bed virtually
impenetrable to normal dogs. Even if your dog can eat through everything, this
chew-proof fabric will usually endure. It is also waterproof, but it should
be known that it will puddle in the rain.
What's unique about
it is that it is an extremely durable form of 100% nylon fabric, which is woven.
It is resistant to:
- Puncturing
- Tearing
- Ripping
- Staining
- Mildew
Used most commonly
in high quality luggage, motorcycle jackets, backpacks, hiking boots, and military
products, it is the absolute time tested and safest choice for chew proofing
resistance against destructive dogs.
It is more durable
than any other fabric used for dog beds. Chew proof dog beds depend on this
fabric, or fabrics based on its principles in order to resist those stubborn
dogs with the munchies.
To compare with
other fabrics, it is:
- Ten times more
durable than cotton duck
- Three times
more durable than standard polyester
- Twice as durable
as standard nylon
Instead of simply
being sewn together, many companies actually laminate the edges of the fabric,
avoiding chewable seams.
What you're aiming
at most is tough substances, which haven't got any 90 degree corners,
holes, or notches that are appealing for little chewing teeth. You
need something durable to withstand a good munch, and a fabric that
will withstand pulling, digging, and chewing. Chew proof beds aren't
easy to find, but when you know what you're looking for, it makes
life a lot easier. It's also cheaper, since you won't need to keep
replacing your dog bed with one more chew proof.
