You'll need to have a large supply of treats to use as primary reinforcers. They have to be absolutely yummy, something your dog just loves, and will be happy to do about anything to get. Generally, it's advised to have a variety of different kinds, so he doesn't get bored by the same old thing. One other thing to keep in mind is that you are going to be using these by the dozens while training, so you must keep them very small so your dog won't overeat. In fact, you might want to consider feeding him his whole dinner this way, though most kibble type dog food won't be tasty enough to use as a reinforcer.

Some possible suggestions for treats include:

- Hot dogs that are cut up into tiny bits, cooked or place in the microwave until crispy.
- Small bits of fried bacon.
- Raw hot dogs or lunch meat, like bologna, cut into tiny bits.
- Cheese, cut up into small bits.
- Turkey or chicken cut into small pieces.
- Beef or turkey jerky cut up in tiny little pieces.
- Ask the butcher for some leftover trimmings, cut up and cook if desired.
- Fried pork skins, sometimes called chicharrones - break into tiny bits.

These are just a few ideas. Use your imagination and your dog's taste to come up with others. Keep them small. Also keep in mind that moist and chewy treats are better than hard, crunchy ones which can take too long to eat.
