Clindamycin
Clindamycin is used in the treatment of soft tissue infections, dental
infections and bone infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria.
It is available as 150mg capsules and as drops containing 25mg/1ml. The
drops should be stored at room temperature. The usual dose in dogs is
2.5-5mg/pound by mouth every 12 hours. The usual dose in cats is 5-10mg/pound
by mouth once a day.

What is this medication used for
Clindamycin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections caused
by susceptible organisms. It is most often used to treat deep wounds,
bone infections, abscesses and infections of the mouth.

Clindamycin is a prescription medication available as capsules and oral
solution.
How this medicine should be used
Clindamycin is FDA approved for use in dogs only; however, it is a commonly
accepted practice for veterinarians to use clindamycin in cats. The usual
dose for dogs is 2.5mg-5mg/pound every 12 hours. The usual dose for cats
is 5-10mg/pound every 24 hours. The actual length of treatment depends
on the specific condition and the response to treatment.
What are the side effects
The side effects of clindamycin may include vomiting and diarrhea.
What special precautions are there
This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it or lincomycin.
Use with caution when given with neuromuscular blocking agents (usually
administered pre-op). Do not use in animals with kidney or liver disease.
Clindamycin may be given with or without food. Nursing puppies or kittens
may develop diarrhea since the medication passes in the milk. Periodic
liver and kidney tests should be performed if the pet is on this medication
for more than one month.
In the event of an overdose
Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. Symptoms of overdose
may include vomiting, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
How should I store this medication
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store
medication at room temperature, away from excess heat, light and moisture.
Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any medication that is outdated
or no longer needed. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
