Contact allergies
are reactions a dog will have when physically touching a substance that
affect a dog's skin upon contact. Contact allergies tend to be the least
common, but may be the easiest to diagnose or locate as they involve a
local skin reaction to a topical substance. But, identifying the allergen
can involve some detective work on your part.
Among the
most common substances are soaps, insecticides, wool, nylon carpets, or
grass. Weeds, mulches, products that are applied to your dog such as shampoos
and dips, plastic dishes, contact with toxic chemicals, reactions to a
flea collar, certain bedding or woolen blankets, topical ointments, etc.,
can also irritate your dog.
Treatments
include avoiding or removing the known substance and anti-itch medication
either given by mouth or applied directly on the dog and the skin problem
disappears.
