Dog agility training
Your guide to Dog Agility Training
Dog agility is a sport or competitive event that involves a handler
directing a dog off-leash through a specially designed obstacle
course. Originally based loosely on equestrian style jumping competitions,
dog agility was first introduced in the UK in 1979 at the renowned
Crufts Dog Show in Birmingham.
From that early start, it has continued to grow in popularity all
over the world, evolving into a sport in its own right, with standardized
rules, associations, and professional trainers. As a demonstration
of teamwork between a dog and its handler, agility combines a dog's
natural physical talents with a handler's patience and control,
making it a challenging and fun sport for the dogs, handlers, and
spectators.
But you don't need spectators to enjoy agility, as many dog owners
train their dogs in agility purely for fun, with no intention to
every compete. It can be a satisfying and enjoyable exercise for
both of you, with the added plus of good physical and mental conditioning.
At its most basic level, agility involves a handler directing a
dog through a course containing a certain number and type of specific
obstacles, though each course has a unique configuration just to
keep things interesting.
