Dog Door Size

Once you've decided on the installation, type and brand of door, you will need to determine the size. In the past, doors usually came in small, medium and large, and selection was fairly easy. That's not so anymore. Now you have the choice of many different sizes and configurations, and if your dog is to be able to use the door easily and well, getting the right size is important. You'll need to know your dog's measurements as well as his weight in order to select the proper size of door. Keep in mind if you're buying for a puppy, what his size will be as an adult dog.

Measuring Your Dog

1. Measure your dog from the highest part of his back to the bottom of his chest. This is the size of flap or opening you will need. Add an extra inch or two to give him room. Better a little too big than too small.
2. Measure the width of your dog at his widest point, which will likely be either his hips or his shoulders. Again, add an inch or so for "ease."
3. Measure your dog from the floor to the lowest point of his belly or chest. This is the "rise," or distance from the floor to the bottom of the opening if installing in a door or well. For a sliding door installation, add the rise to the first measurement above to get the total height of the door from the ground.
4. Weigh your dog.
