Leashes
If you have a dog, you're going to need a leash. In fact, you might
even need more than one leash. There are many reasons why and equally
as many uses for dog leashes.
Many
areas have leash laws that require you to keep your dog on a leash
when using public areas. The law applies whether you're going out
for a walk, attending a dog show, or merely having a picnic in the
local park. Where such laws are in effect, and you are found not
in compliance, you can be cited for breaking the law and have to
pay a fine. In extreme cases, your dog can be seized and taken to
the local doggy jail, where you will have to pay to get him out.
Break the law enough times, and you could even face losing your
precious pet. So it's important to take leash laws seriously.
Even
if you live in an area that doesn't have such a law, there will
still be times you'll need and want to control your dog. If you're
in the process of training your dog, a leash is a necessity. Obedience
schools and classes will require you to have a leash, and even if
you are training on your own, you will need a leash to be able to
train effectively. And then even the best-trained dog can be distracted
and require control at times. For instance if you are out for a
walk and encounter another dog, you will want to be able to restrain
yours to protect both him and the other dog, as well as keep peace
with other people. No one appreciates someone else's dog attacking
their pet. A leash can be indispensable in keeping your dog from
running off chasing dogs, rabbits, or cars. And if your dog is a
service dog, then of course a leash (or handle) is absolutely necessary,
enabling you to stay in contact with him and effectively communicate
according to his training and your needs.
First
you need to decide what you want one for, then look around to see
what's available, and finally choose the right product for your
and your dog's needs. All you need to do is go to your local pet
store and pick one up, right? Well yes - and no. There are actually
a lot more choices than you might realize, so it's a good idea to
take a little time to familiarize yourself with what's available
and what will work best for you before you make that purchase.
