Dog Shampoos Always use a shampoo created specially for dogs. The pH level of your dog's skin is much different from that of humans or other animals. A good basic shampoo is something like the all-in-one shampoo and conditioners sold for humans. It both cleans and moisturizes. Not only will the conditioner in such shampoos help prevent dry skin, but they will make brushing your pet much easier. If your dog has dry skin, try a protein shampoo. However, do not use medicated shampoos unless one has been recommended by your veterinarian. Flea shampoos may be used, but choose one that has as little insecticide as possible. Some flea and tick shampoos contain pyrethrin (made from the flowers of chrysanthemums), which is a natural insecticide that may be less likely to irritate your dog's skin. Dog skin is only 1/6 the thickness of human skin, so never ever use human shampoo products on your dog. Consult your vet for the best shampoo - soap-free for sensitive skins. Oatmeal-based shampoos are great for most skins, and smell good, too! For puppies, a milder shampoo is a good idea. Buy something made for dogs six months or younger. With a little attention to detail, you can keep your dog's skin and coat looking beautiful and healthy. You'll also make your dog feel better - and make petting him a more pleasant experience!
