Dog shoes (or dog boots) are a marvelous invention. They protect your dog's sensitive paws against: broken glass, hot pavement, allergens, foxtails, burrs, ticks, rocks, metal objects, splinters, salt, dirt, mud, snow and ice. They protect hardwood floors, leather upholstery, boat seats, and keep mud off your dog's paws which protects your floors and carpeting.

Dogs generally show rejection for a while when they wear shoes for the first time. Owners should put these on them indoors or outdoors for about 10-30 minutes before going out.

Dog shoes were designed to prevent burning pads, promote healing on cut pads, and to comfort hip dysplasia during walks and sporting activities. They also protect against injury from dragging paws. Dog shoes offer shock absorption and prevent dogs from slipping on icy or wet surfaces both inside and outside. If your dog is allergic to grass, dog shoes are ideal for covering his paws and protecting him from a contact allergy.

Your dog will walk funny for the first few times that he will have them on. The key is to ignore any stubborn behavior that he might have. Have patience and create a routine. Put them on for at least a one-hour period every day for the first few times. This way your dog will get used to wearing them.

Make sure that your dog's paws are not wet before putting on the shoes.

Shoes are great for walks and special outings, but remember to give your dog a break from wearing them all day.

Dog shoes are not recommended for mountainous, rugged or slippery surfaces.

How to put dog shoes on a dog:

- Stand above your dog with his face in front of you. Never try to put on dog shoes with the dog sitting or laying down.
- Open the shoe, take one of his front paws in your hand and place the shoe on the dog's paw.
- Make sure his paw slides forward to the front of the shoe.
- Secure the shoe according to directions that came with the shoes.
- Proceed to the other front paw.

Shift your body so that you are now facing your dog's back legs.

Measure your dog's paw from the front edge of the small pads to the back edge of the large pad. Do not include the nails unless they are unusually long. A snug fit is best or boots may slip off
Dog shoes are sold as a set of 4 shoes - this equals a dog pair!

Most doggy boots slip on and off easily with Velcro attachments.

In addition to dog shoes and boots, doggy socks provide added comfort and extra cushion. They also can help with adjustment if the shoe size needed is a half size or for a paw that is between sizes.
