Vomiting
Dogs vomit occasionally. If a dog feels a little queasy, he can
voluntarily vomit to relieve the irritation. In fact, occasionally
a dog will eat a huge meal, vomit it up, and eat it again. Nobody's
really sure why they do this, but it isn't something most vets are
too
concerned about.
However,
vomiting can also be the body's way of getting rid of something
bad. For example, sometimes dogs eat garbage - something they really
shouldn't be eating. Their bodies will then throw up the indigestible
stuff they've consumed.
If
your dog throws up several times, but doesn't seem ill in any other
way, do the following:
- Have
him fast for a day
- Make sure he has fresh water
- Give him an ice cube or two every four hours (This may help him
not drink so much water that he throws up again)
- After the day of fasting, give him a bland diet of rice and boiled
chicken for a day or two
If
your dog is still throwing up after his day of fasting, or if his
vomit contains blood, if he has other symptoms (like diarrhea or
a fever), see your vet right away because it's possible your dog
has an infection or a toxin.
Sometimes
dogs throw up small amounts of green bile 10 to 12 hours after eating.
This usually means they have an irritable stomach; you can help
ease your dog's stomach by feeding him smaller meals throughout
the day.
