Heartworm disease in dogs What is heartworm? An adult heartworm is around 6 inches long and primarily lives in the heart. Adult heartworms produce thousands of baby worms that live in the blood vessels throughout your pet's body. Heartworm disease spreads when a mosquito bites a dog with heartworm disease and then bites another dog. What are the symptoms? Only at a very advanced stage of heartworm disease will there be symptoms such as coughing, dull coat, no energy, breathing problems, possible fainting, enlarged abdomen. These symptoms are similar to those of congestive heart failure. Heartworm disease can be fatal but in most cases it is curable. How is heartworm disease prevented? When heartworm is detected at an early stage there are three heartworm medications available. Take your pet to the vet Get checkups at your veterinarian every one or two years. Heartworm treatment If your dog has a severe case of heartworm disease he will need treatment at your veterinarian.
