Training my pet to use a pet door

Despite the fact that you install a pet door just for your pet, he may very well not be aware of that and still head straight for the regular door whenever he wants to go out. But don't worry, training your dog to use the new pet door is a simple task, here's how to do it. Leave the pet door open and leave your dog in the house. Now go outside and call your dog through the opening. Most pets will jump at the opportunity and go outside through the pet door.

If your pet is very timid you might want to try and lure him through the opening using a treat as bait. That should do the trick. Now, repeat this exercise a few times. How many times you need to repeat the exercise depends on your individual pet. Some pets have grown so accustomed to their old habits that it may take days for them to realize that the regular door is no longer his way in and out of your home.
