Installing a pet gate is a snap. How much work you will actually need to do depends on the type of gate that you choose.

The easiest type of gate to install is the kind that come with pressure mounts; they are very easy to install because you simply fit the gate tight in the opening.

Hardware mounted gates require more work because you'll need to attach part of the gate on your wall or door - but still (depending on your skills) a relatively easy task.

It is recommended that you only use pressure mounted gates places where there are no immediate safety risks should your dog knock the gate over.
