Pet treats - For love or training..

A treat may well serve as an effective reinforcement tool when it comes to training - or it may simply be something you give your dog because you want him to know how much you love him.

When giving your dog a treat immediately when he does something right during training it will help him associate the action with something positive. Basically this will help your dog to understand and he will learn quicker.

That said, even though you are not currently training your dog, you should always have a treat for your dog. Just to brighten his day. A treat is also a healthy alternative to table scraps, so there's really no excuse :)

Obviously you should take your dogs preference into consideration when choosing a treat. Your dog may prefer a meaty treat, something with a little crunch, something that he can just chew away on, or maybe he prefers something sweet? That said, there are also other factors that you should be aware of. If your dog has gums and/or teeth problems you should go for soft treats. Choose a hypoallergenic treat if your dog has allergies.

Although your dog is likely to display enthusiastism and excessive tail-wagging when it is time for a treat, be careful not to use treats excessively. Excessive use of treats will lead to health problems. Although treats are more healthy than table scraps they should never replace a nutritious diet.

If you're going through a rigorous training proces with your dog you should opt for small treats. This means that you can give your dog a treat more often and it won't distract him from the training proces because he can consume it very quickly. A meaty bone is to a dog what a colorful video game is to your kids :) - you get the idea...
