Similar to a barrier-type restraint, but providing more security as well as portability, portable dog crates and carriers are another option for restraining your dog while driving, at the same time enabling you to carry him from place to place. For a dog that is already crate-trained, this can be a comforting and familiar place, reducing the amount of training necessary to accustom him to car travel. There are a variety of crate styles, made of materials ranging from wire mesh to rigid plastic to sturdy soft-sided nylon enclosures, with windows that roll up to allow a wide field of vision.

Crates can be used with any type of vehicle. With vans and SUVs, they can be placed in the cargo area in back and secured with straps; with sedans they may be place on either the front or back seat and secured with the existing seatbelts. Many portable crates have attachment points just for this purpose. One big advantage of crates is their versatility, as they can also be used for travel by other means, such as by air or train, thus providing a comforting familiarity to your dog regardless of the means of travel.
