Primor

Primor (sulfadimethoxine / ormetoprim) is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat susceptible bacterial infections in dogs. It is available as 240mg and 1200mg scored tablets. The usual dose is 25mg/pound by mouth on day 1 followed by 12.5mg/pound by mouth once a day thereafter. Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Not for use in cats. Pet should be encouraged to drink plenty of water. (sold per tablet)

What is this medication used for
Primor, a potentiated sulfa drug, is used in dogs for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections (wounds and abscesses), and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Availability
Primor is a prescription medication available as scored tablets.

How this medicine should be used
An initial starting dose of 25mg/lb on the first day of treatment is followed by a dose of 12.5mg/lb given once a day. Treatment should continue for 2 days after symptoms disappear, however, treatment should not extend past 21 consecutive days.

What are the side effects
Side effects associated with this medication may include polyarthritis, hives, facial swelling, fever, hemolytic anemia, increased thirst and urination, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. In rare instances, behavioral changes, seizures, aggression and hyper-excitability have occurred.

What special precautions are there
Do not use in dogs allergic to this medication or other sulfonamides. Do not use in dogs with liver damage or blood dyscrasias. Dogs must maintain adequate fluid intake. The safety in breeding dogs has not been established.

Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room.

How should I store this medication
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store tablets at room temperature, away from excess heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
