Prong Collars

The Pronged Collar or German Pinch
This collar is used by many people to control hard to handle dogs. It lies flat on your dog's neck until you give a correction or he pulls. Pressure on the leash causes blunt metal prongs to pinch the dog's neck. While this collar can be effective, it should never be used without the guidance of a qualified trainer. In the case of an aggressive dog, it can actually make the animal worse. Most trainers use the prong collar only as a last resort and only for a short period of time. As with the slip or choke collar tying your dog up, attaching tags, and unsupervised use should be avoided.

This collar is used to gain control of a dog that has a very thick, muscular neck and/or has an attitude. If you are physically unable to control your dog because he's wild, or because you haven't learned how to "mentally" control your dog yet, this collar might be a good choice. It applies pressure only in areas of protruding "fingers" which poke out toward the dog's neck. These collars are not as damaging to the windpipe as traditional choke training collars. However, many trainers feel they are unnecessary. If you use a training method based on correction, the pronged collar will require less strength to operate, and will result in less damage to the dog's windpipe and vertebrae.
