Generic Name Cefpodoxime (sef-poe-dock’-seem) proxetil Brand Name(s) Simplicef (Pfizer Animal Health), Vantin (Pharmacia and Upjohn) What is this medication used for Simplicef is a cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for use in the treatment of skin infections (wounds and abscesses) of dogs caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. Availability Simplicef is available by prescription as 100mg scored tablets and 200mg tablets. How this medication should be used Simplicef is FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine. The usual dose in dogs is 2.3-4.5mg per lb, given by mouth, once a day for 5 to 7 days or 2 to 3 days beyond the cessation of clinical signs, up to a maximum of 28 days. The actual dose and duration of therapy is based on the particular infection and the dog’s response to treatment. What are the side effects Side effects of Simplicef may include vomiting, diarrhea and decreased appetite. What special precautions are there This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it or other penicillins or cephalosporins. Use with caution in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs. Use with caution in animals with impaired kidney function. Use with caution in animals with seizure disorder. This medication is for animal use only. In the event of overdose Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. How should I store this medication Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store the tablets at room temperature (68º to 77º F), away from excess heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
