It is used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin and gastrointestinal organs caused by susceptible organisms Availability Sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim is available by prescription as tablets and suspension. How this medicine should be used Sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to use this medication in dogs and cats. The usual dose in dogs and cats is 13mg/pound every 24 hours which may be divided into two doses 12 hours apart. What are the side effects Side effects when using sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim may include loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, anemia, allergic reaction including facial swelling and hives, and seizures. Eyes should be monitored for KCS (dry eyes). What special precautions are there Do not use sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim in animals allergic to it or other sulfonamides (sulfa drugs). Do not use in animals with liver or kidney disease or blood disorders. Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. The animal must be allowed to drink a lot of water. Use caution when giving with methotrexate, phenylbutazone, salicylates, probenecid, phenytoin, anticoagulants such as warfarin and MAOIs such as selegiline. Always tell your veterinarian and pharmacist what other medications your pet is taking. If using the suspension, shake well before each use. In the event of an overdose Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. Symptoms of overdose while rare may include vomiting, diarrhea or hyperexcitability. How should I store this medication Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store this medication at room temperature, away from excess heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
