Sulfasalazine

What is this medication used for
Sulfasalazine is a sulfa analog that has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity. It is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease.

Availability
Sulfasalazine is available by prescription as tablets.

How this medication should be used
Sulfasalazine is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to use this medication in dogs and cats. The usual dose in dogs is 10 to 15mg per lb given every 8 hours. The usual dose in cats is 5 to 10mg per lb given once a day. However, dosage can vary based on the condition being treated, the severity of the condition and the response to therapy.

What are the side effects
Side effects of sulfasalazine may include KCS (dry eye) with long-term use. Other side effects that may occur include jaundice, hemolytic anemia, vomiting, and allergic dermatitis.

What special precautions are there
This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it or other sulfonamide (sulfa) medications or salicylates (aspirin). Use with caution when giving to pregnant or lactating animals. Do not use in animals with blood cell disorders such as anemia or in animals that are dehydrated, have intestinal or urinary obstruction, liver or kidney disease and bladder or kidney stones. Use with caution when given with methotrexate, warfarin (Coumadin), phenylbutazone, thiazide diuretics, salicylates (aspirin), probenecid (Benemid), and Phenytoin (Dilantin). The effect of folic acid and digoxin (Lanoxin) may be decreased when given with sulfasalazine. Do not give antacids within 2-3 hours before or after giving a dose of sulfasalazine.

In the event of overdose
Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. Symptoms of overdose may include symptoms noted in “side effects” as well as depression, increased rate of breathing, muscle weakness, confusion, seizures, and facial swelling.

How should I store this medication
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store tablets at room temperature, away from excess heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
