Dog Food Recipes

Homemade dog food recipes come in both standard recipe form, and also as meal ‘starters’ or packets of ingredients to which you add fresh ingredients to make a complete food. There are many free dog food recipes available online, and many more available for purchase, either downloadable, or in printed book form. If you are considering switching from commercially prepared food to homemade dog food, one thing to keep in mind is to be sure to switch your dog over gradually by first mixing the two types of foods together and gradually decreasing the amount of commercial food. Doing this will help ensure a smooth transition that doesn’t upset your dog’s digestion.

Some examples of dog food recipes are:

Chicken Liver Dog Food

1 lb. raw chicken livers
Fresh or dried garlic
2 tbsp. Cooking oil
2 cups old fashioned oats
2 – 3 eggs

Place chicken livers with broth, in 3 qt. saucepan. Cover with about 2 inches of water. Add garlic and oil. Cover and simmer for about 1 hour, or until livers are tender. Break up livers into small pieces, and bring mixture to a boil. You should have about 3 cups of liquid. If you don’t, add more water. Break eggs into boiling mixture, and stir, so that they break up. Add oats, and cook for about 1/2 hour more. Add more liquid as needed. Cool and serve.

Salmon Dog Food

1 cup cooked boneless salmon
1/2 cup finely chopped cooked carrot
1/2 cup finely chopped cooked broccoli
1/2 cup cooked green peas
1 1/2 cup cooked long grain brown rice
1/8 tsp. dried basil leaves

Mix ingredients together and serve.

Raw homemade dog foods are based on the BARF principles, which stand for Bones and Raw Foods, or Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods. Since variety is greatly stressed, there are few actual recipes available. Rather you’re likely to find lists of ingredients, combined with advice on combining them, together with some sample daily menus. Here are a few sample BARF diet menus, based on a twice daily feeding schedule:

– Breakfast: Two raw eggs mixed with 1/2 tsp. vitamin C and 1/2 tsp. apple cider. Drop into the mixture 1 piece of torn up bread.
– Dinner: Hamburger Veggies. Mashed up with 1/2 tsp. vitamin C added.

– Breakfast: Two heaping tbsp. cottage cheese with 1/2 tsp. vitamin C and 1/2 tsp. apple cider vinegar mixed in.
– Dinner: Chicken wings or backs, or Rainbow trout, or sardines
